Uptake is a private artificial intelligence software company specializing in industrial sector innovations. It was founded in 2014 in Chicago, Illinois by Brad Keywell.
Uptake was built based on the foundation of machine learning and data science. The core projects of Uptake include a fully managed platform and an Asset Performance Management application.
Uptake’s products in industry-specific content includes Asset strategy Library or ASL that offers guidance on preventing failures in equipment and power usage. ASL has the largest market as of 2023 with 800 equipment types, over 58,000 failure modes and over 180,000 reportable conditions.
Approximately 300 employees work under it. The company offers predictive analytics that makes developing and deploying predictive models easier for Data Scientists, Data Engineers and Data Analysts.
Uptake Business
Uptake developed its business around data science and machine learning in 2014 in Chicago and at present it had offices in Houston, San Francisco, Riyadh, Mississauga and Albuquerque.
In 2015 Uptake saw its first investment from Caterpillar that aimed for a joint development systems to improve and monitor the use of Caterpillar’s 3 million pieces of equipment in the data science field. In mid 2016 the core business offerings of Caterpillar will be completed.
On September of 2016, Uptake strategically partnered with Progress Rail to launch EMD Uptime that offered conditioned monitoring. In 2017, Berkshire Hathaway Energy, a company that Warren Buffett owns, announced its partnership with Uptake.
Berkshire Hathaway Energy (BHE) which has a portfolio of 84 billion dollars companies that primarily invests in renewable space. At present, two BHE subsidiaries, MidAmerican Energy Company and BHE Renewables uses Uptake’s software to track and connect their fleet to wind turbines.
Back in 2018, Uptake announced that the U.S. Army would start using its software to improve some of its Bradley Fighting Vehicles readiness. Back in 2018, Uptake hired Ganesh Bell, as the President of the company who was General Electrics’ former chief digital officer. In 2019, Ganesh Bell step down as Uptake’s President, announced by Uptake.
Around 2020, Uptake announced Kanye Grau to take Ganesh Bell’s place as its President. In 2021, Grau announced as the CEO of the company with the founder of Uptake, Brad Keywell as the Executive Chairman of the Board.
Uptake Financing
The Company announced that it was able to raise 45 million dollars in investment from GreatPoint Ventures. It’s previous investors in the company, Caterpillar and New Enterprise Associates, in 2015.
Uptake’s valuation at that time after the fresh investment at 1 billion dollars made it the third unicorn in Illinois.
Beginning of 2017, Revolution Growth, a company founded by Steve Case, Ted Leonsis, and Donn Davis, announced they would be investing in it in Series C funding of 40 million dollars. The company’s valuation at 2.3 billion dollars after Series D investment of 117 million dollars.
