Sony decided to enter the mobile gaming market after the PSP, and the PS Vita became unessential to gamers.
Key Points:
- Sony will re-enter the mobile gaming market.
- It has created a new department called PlayStation Studios Mobile Division.
- It has bought Savage Game Studios as its first mobile game development studio.
Sony has reportedly announced that it’s making a comeback into the mobile gaming market. It has planned to create and launch new games and IPs for Android and iOS smartphones and tablets.
Sony decided to move forward with this proposition after the slow decline in gamers’ interest in portable gaming devices. This includes the popular PlayStation Portable (PSP) and the semi-successful PlayStation Vita (PS Vita).
The company has decided to start their new efforts off by creating a new department called PlayStation Studios Mobile Division. PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst said, “our new efforts will additive by providing more ways for players to engage with our gaming content.”
Sony has acquired mobile game developers Savage Game Studios as its first developmental team. This firm has many industry veterans from other companies like Rockstar Games, Rovio, and Insomniac Games (also owned by Sony). The company has stated that all studios will work independently from the other divisions.
This decision came after the success of porting PS-exclusive games to the PC, like Marvel’s Spider-Man and God of War. After their respective PC ports, both the games sold pretty well, selling upwards of millions of copies so far. In addition, Sony plans to make AAA-quality games for smartphones, seeing lots of potential growth in this sector.
