History Of Dataminr
Dataminr was founded in 2009 by Ted Bailey, Jeff Kinsey and Sam Hendel. All three were graduates from Yale University. Dataminr got its spot light when in reported Osama bin Laden’s death 23 minutes faster than any other news organizations.
Dataminr partnered with CNN and Twitter in 2014 to form Dataminr for News. This tool was used to “alert journalists to information that’s emerging on Twitter in real time.” it has claimed that it was the first detectors of initial COVID-19 outbreak though data from social media posts.
The company also detected the areas that was bound to have spikes in Covid-19 outbreak in 14 states in the US. A week later 7 of the 14 states were hit by the coronavirus.
In 2019, Dataminr partnered with the United Nations to equip thousands of its employees with First Alert technology that aids first responders in crisis management.
On 5th January, 2021, the company alleges that it warned the Capitol security of troubling public chatter online that soon resulted in the 6th January riot.
In 2021, it has its first M&A transaction by acquiring Watchkeeper, a geovisualization platform based in the UK. In this acquisition the company will use geovisualized data layer of Watchkeeper with the Dataminr Pulse platform to give context about events.
The same year in October Dataminr acquired Krizo, a company based in Copenhagen, Denmark that offers real-time crisis response.
As of 2022, the company has over 950 employees.
